I’ve started to live by the rule that winter is for making mistakes. That was not my initial intention, but after the past two years, it’s safe to say that it’s become a new norm for me.
This past winter was filled with dates, dives, and disasters.
(My cousin even saw one of the guys and called him a jump scare).
Now summer is around the corner. It’s time for Single Sara Summer™.
Reflecting on those dates, dives, and disasters, now is the time to stop making the same mistakes. Summer is too short in Canada to waste it in dive bars with boys who can barely tie their shoelaces.
I’m going into the dive bar alone, flirting with the bartender and sipping a Campari soda. Just for myself. I won’t be bothered to make awkward small talk with someone who is not funny but tried to be a stand-up comedian.
Will I have to deflect the endless stream of “you’re so attractive” comments? Probably. But I’ll simply smile and laugh before focusing my attention elsewhere. Enjoying the freedom of not having to entertain a man that gives you attention.
I’ll pretend like I didn’t notice the guy looking at me across the bar. He’ll catch me looking back, but I’ll be coy until he finally waves.
It’s time to ditch the disasters of the winter after one too many drinks trying to piece together what happened.
It’s time to ditch the anxiety and questions of why they chose you over all the other choices.
It’s time to embrace the sunshine and the possibilities of a fresh start. To stream Solar Power by Lorde as a reminder of how we can change with the seasons. We get to leave the bad weather behind, with all its mistakes and let the bliss begin.
